About Me

New acquaintances ask, "How long have you been stitching?" and the answer has to be, "Gee, Let's see... How old am I?" My mother was one of those very handy people. She didn't care for reading, and, since she was almost tone-deaf, music to her was just so much noise. She also couldn't stand being idle. We didn't have a lot of money, and that fit in perfectly with what she wanted to do with herself. She made everything and nothing in the house was safe from improvement. (I awoke on my 16th birthday to the noise of my mother breaking down walls...)

As most little kids do, I wanted to do whatever my mother was doing. To get me to quit bugging her, she stuck a needle and thread in my hands before I was three. By the time I was five, I was deftly using her old White treadle sewing machine and inventing doilies with left-over crochet thread.

Over the years, I made a lot of my kids' clothes and put teeny flowers and smocking on baby dresses; latch-hooked rugs and wall hangings; embroidered pictures, placemats, napkins, tablecloths, and (of all things) pillowcases; knitted sweaters, afghans, and socks; needlepointed a couple of things; did huck-stitch towels; and macramé. I even tried painting and pottery on a wheel. My greatest achievement was two wedding dresses that didn't even come close to the beauty of the two daughters in them. It was almost a, "You name it, I've done it," kind of thing.

Surprisingly, though, I'd never done counted cross stitch. Of course, when I had kids, I taught them whatever they would try (although I could never convince my son to try needlepoint, Rosie Greer or not). Then, in the late 70s when my daughters were about grown, they showed up with all this "stuff." I pooh-poohed the whole idea as being amateurish and simplistic. HAH! Soon they were producing beautiful pictures and making useful things like eyeglass cases.

So I tried it, and I was hooked. (I can almost hear the two of them now, sniggering.)
