Cross-stitch From Photos

Cross Stitch pictures from photos are extremely beautiful, but also are extremely complex. I strongly recommend that beginners do several samplers which use every possible stitch and floss type, and maybe take a class before tackling a photo. For best results, photo patterns should be stitched on Evenweave at 28 stitches to the inch and use up to 150 colors. Photos are not for the faint of heart!

Patterns derived from photos contain a large number of half, quarter, three-quarter, over-one, and over-two stitches. A single 10-by-10 section may contain 10 different colors. Needless to say, it's very difficult to keep the back of the work tidy; it's also essential to keep it tidy so the front stays smooth.

While there is less outline stitching than in a more cartoon-style pattern, it's more subtle, and it also uses more colors. Outlining is used to smooth "jaggies" and provide just a hint of definition between areas.
